NFL Draft, Tebow, Made vs Born & “Bounce” by Syed(Cool Book?)
I was going back and forth with a buddy of mine this morning about the NFL Draft and we immediately jumped into Tebow….
Thunder - Bro. tebow?
Me - You don’t want to hear my perspective on that one… ;)
Thunder - I actually do….i think it’s the worst pick ever
Me - Haaaaaaa!
I think it’s a BIG BOY pick that takes serious balls to make. For
that reason, I dig but at that slot, ahead of Clausen….wow! I’m a
LARGE buyer of intangibles and feel they’re as important if not more
important at the qb position than any other on the field. How many
times do we see guys like Jamarcus Russell with off the charts
physical gifts and measurables come into the league and then break
because they don’t have the intangibles? Worst case, Teabow will make
other guys better by buying into Mcdaniels’ system in a way that only
he can.
This will be one of the coolest “experiments” ever to watch and it’s a
make or break pick because of the risk. Won’t go so far as to say
boom or bust but honestly, do you see Teabow falling down and not
getting back up?
I’m still waiting for Thunder to come back to me on this one and something tells me by putting him on front street, he’s going to have a whole lot to say on this one…
So Tebow is all heart. Awesome talent but the guy has zero quit and the whole “elite athlete’s mind”. Some stronger than others of course but personified by guys that just “win” - Jordon, Favre, Jeter…you get the idea.
After thinking about this, I cam across this book “Bounce” by Syed that draws all sorts of relevant parallels between made vs born, sport vs business etc etc
With all due respect(“What, I said all due respect???”), the Table Tennis Champ thing was a little distracting (not your typical “athlete” or “sport”…) but thinkning this book might be interesting…
If anyone is reading or has finished, let us know what you think. I’m still cranking through “Power of Pull” by Hagel but will probably get into ”Bounce” next unless someone persuades me not to.

“Ostensibly Mr. Syed’s own experience gives him a keen understanding of how an elite athlete’s mind works. But “Bounce” never conveys a sense that the author has much personal insight into the subject. Instead, he focuses in part (as Mr. Gladwell did in “Outliers”) on how 10,000 hours of practice is what enables athletes, musicians and others to make the vault from good to great. That view, of course, is also Prof. Ericsson’s. So is Mr. Syed’s argument that so-called prodigies are made, not born. That’s a fair enough point, but who ever accused Roger Federer or Mozart of coasting on their way to the top?”
